St Joseph
Pope Francis has proclaimed 2021 to be ‘The Year of St Joseph’ and on Friday (March 19th) we will celebrate the Feast Day of our school patron – St Joseph, with Mass at 12.30pm.
We have much that we can learn from Joseph. He showed great courage in becoming the legal father to Jesus. He was a tender and loving father, who showed great faith in the word of God. He was trusting and patient with his wife Mary and was happy to support his wife and son. He was a hard worker and taught Jesus many life lessons.
Saint Joseph is known as the silent, humble servant of God. This is mainly because there is not one record of Joseph speaking in the Gospels. In John’s Gospel, Joseph is mentioned once when someone calls Jesus “the son of Joseph”.
It is through the Gospel readings of Matthew and Luke that we learn about St Joseph. We know he was a carpenter, a working man, for the Nazarenes ask about Jesus, “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55).
We know he was a compassionate and caring man by the way Joseph cared for Mary and the infant Jesus, and later searched anxiously for three days for Jesus when he stayed behind at the Temple (Luke 2:41-52).
We know Joseph respected God by the way he dutifully followed God’s commands.
St Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, a happy death, families, fathers, expectant mothers, travellers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, and working people in general.
Let us ask St Joseph for his powerful intercession to watch over us and protect our families. May he show us how to love, how to trust and help us care for others as he lovingly cared for Mary and Jesus.
The following is the Pope’s special prayer for the ‘Year of St Joseph’.
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.
