On Wednesday 29th June, St Joseph’s will be holding a ‘Winter Woollies Day’ to support the St Vincent De Paul Society’s fundraiser ‘Vinnies Winter Appeal’.
Students are invited to wear a beanie or scarf with their school uniform to support the Winter Appeal.
Vinnies would appreciate donations of ‘Winter Woollies’ such as gloves, socks, jackets, beanies, blankets or sleeping bags. All donations are distributed through the homelessness and community services.
The Feast of Nativity of John the Baptist - Friday 24th June
John the Baptist is the only saint other than Virgin Mary, whose birthday is celebrated by the Church in a liturgical feast. Usually the Church celebrates the day of a saint’s death as their feast. However Mary and John are exceptions as they were born from original sin.
John the Baptist was the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, and he was related to Jesus on his mother’s side. His birth is celebrated six months before Christmas Day, since Elizabeth became pregnant six months before the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary. John began his ministry when he was around thirty years old. He called people to repent and baptised them in water as a sign of purification.
