Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a wonderful first week for me at St Joseph’s Adelong. The staff, students and parents have made me feel so welcome. Even walking around the village people are waving and saying hello!
While it is so special for me to be here, I wish it was for a happier reason. I hope you will continue to keep Kirsty in your prayers as she undergoes treatment and makes a full recovery.
I express my sincere thanks to Miss Braun and the staff who have ensured that it has been ‘business as usual’ following Kirsty’s unexpected departure. They have ensured the students have continued to receive quality teaching and support.
Opening of the School Year Mass
We were able to celebrate the beginning of the school year and ask for God’s blessing on our community on Tuesday this week. Thank you to Miss Braun for her organisation of a beautiful ceremony, to Mrs Murray for her assistance and all the staff and students who helped in setting up our sacred space on the top oval.
It was wonderful that we could welcome the Year 6 parents to the occasion to officially present the leadership badges to the Year 6 leaders, I’m sure a very proud moment for each of them! I look forward to working with our leaders on some projects and events.
Staff Changes
From Monday 28 February to Friday 4 March Miss Soulsby will be taking leave to participate in the National Finals for Reined Cow Horse at Scone. We wish Jessica the best of luck and safe travels. Mrs Parker has been engaged to teach Year 2/3. If you have any concerns during this week please contact Mrs Parker or myself.
Covid Update
It is exciting to see that Covid restrictions are easing.
As of Monday 28th February the following changes will be enacted;
- Mixing of cohorts at school for activities will be relaxed
- Schools will be able to welcome parents and visitors onto school grounds regardless of vaccination status
- Schools can resume activities such as assemblies and school camps
- Mask requirements for high school staff and students will be lifted.
As of Monday 7th March;
- Mask requirements for primary staff and students will be lifted.
Parents are asked to continue using RATS twice per week (or if students are exhibiting symptoms) until the end of Week 8 – 25th March.
From the beginning of Week 9 – 28th March, this requirement will be lifted but tests will be available from the school if parents wish to continue testing their children.
RATS will be sent home today with the students. For those students who are absent today at the Western Region Swimming Carnival, their tests will be sent home with siblings or they can be collected tomorrow. Please ring the school if you need replacements at any time.
Piano Lessons
The piano teacher Vanessa Hall will begin piano lessons next week with the students. These will be on Wednesday from 12:15.
Cyber Safety
Our students and ourselves socialise, learn, interact and connect in the cyber or online world. Our children’s safety is paramount. The best way for parents and carers to protect their children is to be informed. I draw your attention to the advertisement for eSafety Parent and Carer Webinars. There are different topics each month with helpful hints and information. I would encourage you to look at these and regularly discuss online activity with your children. Please use the following link: esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars
Next week we mark the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. For Catholics this is a time for self-reflection and deeper engagement in prayer. It can also be a time of fasting, abstinence or acts of generosity. This helps to focus on the ultimate sacrifice, the death of Jesus and the new life offered through the Resurrection.
I am looking forward to getting to know all the families here at Adelong. Please feel free drop in and say hello and if there are matters you wish discuss ring and make an appointment.
God bless,
K F McGrath

It is imperative to St Joseph's that we have up to date contact details for each family.
If your email, address, phone numbers, emergency contact person has changed during the holidays, please let us know so we can update our records.
All students who carry a Ventolin puffer in their school backpack will need to have a current Asthma Action Plan, we need to have these updated each year.
THANK YOU FROM MRS BEAVAN
On Monday the Community Council, on behalf of the children and families at St Joseph’s sent a lovely flower arrangement to our wonderful Principal, Mrs Beavan, to show our love and support for her whilst she faces this difficult time. Mrs Beavan asked to please pass on her sincere thanks to all of the children and families, who continue to give her much strength. Adelong Show
The Adelong Show is coming up, Saturday March 12th. St Joseph’s will be running a BBQ in the evening from approximately 4pm -9pm. We will be asking for families to assist on the evening with cooking the BBQ and serving. We already have families committed to running the show, so please if you are able to spare some time it would be wonderful. With the show taking a new day and format this year, this BBQ could be a great fundraising activity for our school. Please find following a link to put your name on the roster.

Tumut Takes 2
Andrew Reynolds has very kindly offered to participate in Tumut Takes 2, to further support fundraising for our great school. There will be lots happening with this in the coming months and we do ask for everyone to help Andrew out in some way. It is extremely generous of Andrew, and our school will benefit greatly from this.
There is already a Trivia night planned for Saturday May 7th, Save the Date!
Hi Schools
Goodes Coaches facebook page, please like & share
We will use facebook to keep parents informed of any changes or buses running late.
Goodes Coaches received an email from Transport for NSW 21/02/22
Regarding Face masks still mandatory on Public Transport over 12 years and recommended for under 12 years
Thank you for your continuing support in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the announcement by the Premier on the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we expect more people to return to public transport in the coming weeks.
Importantly, face masks remain mandatory on public transport and in all public transport waiting areas for customers and staff.
Transport for NSW is currently working through its COVIDSafe measures on public transport going forward and we will update you with what this will mean for you and your services shortly.
For now, please continue to follow your current COVIDSafe measures
At all times, operators should be guided by their own work health and safety risk assessment and their policies and procedures to ensure that the risk of COVID-19 transmission to staff and customers is minimised.
Thank you for the vital role you are all playing in not only protecting yourself but those around you.
K/1 and 2/3 created some stunning pieces of art using some simple ingredients - milk, food colouring and detergent. 2/3 also made paperclips float and 4/5/6 witnessed a case where 25+ 25 did NOT equal 50. You might like to ask your children to explain.
I used these activities as inspiration to what fun science can be, and to set expectations around using equipment safely and sensibly. The students were truly spectacular in their behaviour and their application to the tasks.
As part of the Digital Technology curriculum, I have spent the first two weeks of term introducing the notion of coding, used in all computer programs, apps and artificial intelligence.
There has been a lot of laughter as I asked students to program "Robyn the Robot" (me!) to make a Vegemite sandwich - students began to understand how important it is to make their coding instructions very specific!
The students have then turned their attention to coding Bee-bots to spell their name, or a secret word, on a large ABC mat and then to write algorithms to get their Bee-Bot through a maze.
I really hope your children are enjoying our activities - I certainly have!
