YAY, YAY, YAY!!!!!! Words cannot describe how thrilled I am to finally see our new build commencing. In just over a week so much progress has been made and it is fantastic to see how quickly things are progressing. Cross Build from Boorowa has the contract for the build, and it has been really positive working with them and I look forward to this continuing throughout the whole process. Students are really enjoying coming to school to watch what is happening and I know that recess and lunch is very exciting watching the bob cats, trucks and action that is taking place!
The support from the Community council both past (for many years) and present to throw everything behind this build in terms of fund raising, coming to meetings discussing the build and having a genuine desire to see this come into fruition has been fabulous. It is reassuring that our parent community like me cannot wait to have brand new facilities where our staff and students have the best facilities and learning environment. I believe that this will be not only an asset to the St Joseph’s community but for the town of Adelong. As well as receiving funding from the Australian Capital Grants Program through the Catholic Schools NSW Limited Block Grant Authority (BGA), Catholic Education are contributing a significant amount of funds to the project. Without this invaluable contribution from Catholic Education the build would not have been possible.
A big thank you to parents for your cooperation in the changed pick up and drop off arrangements. The new arrangements are working well and all children are familiar with the new routine.
We look forward to our author’s visit on Thursday by Pip Harry. Pip is a renowned author who writes novels for children and young adults including the 2020 CBCA Children’s Book of the Year for Younger Readers Little Wave. I’ll tell you mine, Are you there Buddha? And August and Jones are some other titles that Pip has written. A HUGE thank you to Jess Pearce for organising and coordinating the visit – Pip will also visit McAuley and St Patrick’s Gundagai, and 5/6 students from St Mary’s Batlow will join us at Adelong. A very generous donation from Treasures New and Old is being used to help fund the author’s visit and we thank them for their wonderful support of our school so that the students can enjoy wonderful opportunities such as this one.
Our athletics carnival is set down for this Friday – weather permitting. It would be wonderful if you get the chance to come down and support your child/ren on the day or lend a hand if you can.
Over the next coming weeks our Community Council will transition to a new model. This will mean that all positions will be declared vacant and we will be calling for expressions of interest to be on the Community Council. Please have a think about joining our Community council, it is a great way to be involved in your child’s education and to be part of a hard working committee that is focused on our students and how we can support them. More information regarding the expressions of interest and nominations will follow in our next newsletter.
Blessings for a great week,

Congratulations to Christopher, Eva, Reuben, Brydee and Barney on making the sacrament of First Holy Communion on Sunday. It was a lovely celebration and we thank Fr Joe for leading such a special Mass.
Confirmation
Please keep Billy, Henry, Primrose and Ollie in your prayers as they begin their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of Christian initiation. Confirmation completes Baptism, by which in the laying on of hands and the anointing with Chrism Oil, we are confirmed with the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

5/6 have had a busy few weeks at St Joseph's with lots of learning and fun activities.
In Maths, we completed an exciting lesson where the students had to find the secret location of a sign that listed the distances from it's place to other major cities. To solve this, they were given a compass, rulers and an atlas. They then worked with a partner to try and find the location of the sign. It was wonderful to see the student's different strategies; some students used the compass to measure the radius of where the location could be and some students used their rulers and the scale of the maps to work out the distances. In the end, we worked out the location was somewhere in New Zealand.
In English, we are working on writing a factual text based on Jandamarra, an Aboriginal warrior. This links nicely with our novel study, Black Cockatoo, which follows the story of an Indigenous girl living in the Kimberley's who is trying to live up to her spirit animal, the Black Cockatoo. 5/6 have been working on improving their simple sentences by adding subordinating conjunctions and appositives and the results have been amazing.
In Geography, 5/6 have been learning about environmental biomes. They have chosen a biome and a country and are embarking on a research project that will eventuate in the students creating a diorama of their chosen biome, which they are very excited about.
St Joseph's Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 7th June at the Adelong Showground.
On the day we will require quite a few parent helpers with time-keeping and field events, please let us know if you could assistance even if it is for a short time. Students will come to school as normal and then we will walk to the Showground from school. Further details will be out by the end of the week.
Please note: change of date. The Compass event has been updated with the relevant information.
Students that are ordering lunch are required to have their lunch order slip and payment in tomorrow (Wednesday 5th June) for finalisation.
Book Club catalogues will be sent home this week.
Orders need to be placed by Wednesday 19th June
Please place your order and pay via the LOOP app (no cash or cheques)
Please see below communication about semester 1 reports.
‘Catholic Education Canberra-Goulburn (CECG) has communicated to schools regarding reporting to parents/guardians. CE has advised schools that general comments will not be required on Semester 1, 2024 reports, but to prioritise Parent/Teacher Conferences for every family in Term 2. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, their strengths, challenges and future areas of focus. A Semester Report will still be sent home as in previous Semesters providing A-E grading and attendance information.
CE has advised schools that Semester 2, 2024 reports will have a general comment for all children. This general comment will provide a summative comment for the year, areas of achievement and areas to focus on for the following year. A-E grading and attendance information will remain as normal.
We would encourage all parents/guardians to engage regularly with their child/ren’s learning, connecting with their class teacher/s regularly to discuss learning progress.’
Keep up to date with events happening at St Joseph's via our electronic school calendar (please note dates can be subject to change).
- Grounds Maintenance Roster
Families please keep an eye on the grounds and when you mow, let the school know you have mowed and the office will contact the next person on the list.
Section A | Section B |
Annetts Family | Williams Family |
Singh Family | Pearce Family |
Shiels Family | Frank Corbett Family |
We would like if families could check if some of the areas in your allocated section need whipper snipping eg; around trees, rock/rockeries etc.
Please ensure you have re-filled the fuel tanks on the mower or whipper snipper after you finish and advise the school if we require more fuel. Please also advise the school that you have mowed so we can let the next Family know that it is their turn.
