Welcome to Week 2. A big thank you to everyone that contributed to the community council’s street stall last Friday which was a great success. We have another street stall coming up on Friday 25th August so if you didn’t have the opportunity to man the stall or to do some cooking lock that date in your calendar, it would be fantastic to have all families contribute! If anyone is happy to donate a load of wood for the street stall please contact the school, it would be very much appreciated.
We had our second Open day today which was fabulous to welcome not only more kindergarten students for 2024 but a student in Yr 1 who will join St Joseph’s next term.
The 2024 Kindy orientation process will begin in Wk 9 of term. Please keep an eye on the calendar for other important events such as the Kindergarten Information night which is coming up on 30th August. Enrolments are able to be completed online, so please go to our website if you have a child who will be in Kindergarten next year and complete the online enrolment form.
The St Joseph’s uniform policy after being reviewed by staff, students and parents earlier this year has been implemented. Catholic Education has made some small changes to the policy in regards to hair longer than shoulder length, which has been updated on our website and all parents are encouraged to read.
Thank you to all parent’s for ensuring that students are in full school uniform. If financial constraints are not allowing your child to be in uniform please contact Mrs Beavan. Reminder emails will be sent out to parents for students repeatedly not in correct uniform.
Walking to school
The age that school aged children should walk to and from school independently is a parent’s decision. The recommended age is over 10 years and St Joseph’s strongly encourages parents to be guided by the advice from the NSW government.
Archies jacket
Archie in Yr 6 is missing his school jacket. He has his name on the label, if someone has accidently taken it home, please return it to school – many thanks.
Trent Barrett
Yr 3/4 students will participate in the Trent Barrett competition next Tuesday 1st August. Please complete the compass permission form that has been sent out which also contains details for the day.
Swap it
St Joseph’s has signed up to be a SWAP IT school. Children are coming home today with a brochure of easy ideas for healthier lunchboxes. This is a great resource from NSW government, and we will continue to put some helpful articles in the school newsletter.
SWAP IT is a free evidence-based healthy lunchbox program. The program supports parents and carers to SWAP what is packed in their child’s lunchbox from sometimes foods to everyday foods.
- Free – no cost for schools to take part.
- Easy for Parents – visual inspiration to make lunchboxes faster and healthier with no extra cost.
- Easy for Schools – our resources complement the existing curriculum.
- Proven to work – SWAP IT enhances the nutritional quality of lunchbox foods. Parents love it, and teachers see significant benefits in the classroom.
Naplan
Yr 3 and Yr 5 students are coming home today with their Naplan results. Our overall results were very pleasing and Naplan is one tool that staff use to guide further teaching. As a whole school, staff will be unpacking the results over the coming weeks.
Blessings for another beautiful week of sunshine!

Counsellor Profile & Service
My name is Lucinda Clay and I have recently joined the Marymead CatholicCare Student & Family Counselling team. I began my counselling journey in 2014 with Australian Institute of Family Counselling in Canberra. Over the years I have had experience working in Mental Health, Aged Care and Pastoral Care. For the last 7 years I have been working as a Counsellor in Private Practice supporting adults, families and children.
For many of the students I will be a familiar face. For those families who don't know me, I began working part-time at St. Joseph's as the Student Wellbeing Officer/Chaplain in 2020. Over the past three and half years, I have enjoyed supporting staff, students and families and witnessing the St. Joseph's welcoming, caring and supportive spirit.
What is the Counselling Service?
Marymead CatholicCare’s Student and Family Counsellors provides school counselling in Catholic and Independent schools throughout Canberra and Regional NSW. This service aims to support students to achieve academic success, psychological health, and social and emotional wellbeing.
Generally, students engaged in the service receive 6 to 8 individual therapy sessions which are provided at school. All students who wish to access the service require a current referral and parent/guardian consent must be obtained prior to students engaging in the service. Once a referral has been received, I will contact the parents/guardian to further discuss individual student needs, outline the counselling process and answer any questions you may have.
I am looking forward to continuing to support St. Joseph's by providing the Student & Family Counselling service. I will be here every Monday and for Term 3 I will be providing additional Wednesdays. If you have any questions about school counselling or if you feel that your child may benefit from this service, please do not hesitate to contact me through the school or email me at lucinda.clay@mccg.org.au. If you would like to refer your child, please use link below https://mccg.my.site.com/housing/s/school-referral-form

On Wednesday 19th July, representatives from St Patrick's Gundagai, St Mary's Batlow, and the Year 6 student's of St Joesph's Adelong went to McAuley to participate in a NAIDOC Mass. Culley, Sam and Archie were asked to do a reading and everyone payed their respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. It was a lovely Mass. We all had a great morning and enjoyed a wonderful morning tea afterwards. We would like to thank McAuley for inviting us to participate.
The 2023 Trent Barrett Legends Gala Day will be held on Tuesday the 1st of August at Twickenham Oval, Tumut for student in yr 3/4. Students will play in a mixed tackle team and complete a round robin of games.
As this is a tackle event, students must wear head gear and a mouth guard.
Students will travel to the event via parent/carer transport.
A canteen will be available on the day.
Further information and draw will be posted on Compass closer to the date.
Olympians Unleashed Presentation
Emma Jeffcoat will be connecting with Year K - 6 students on 8/08/2023 2:10 PM, as part of Olympics Unleashed.
The students will learn from Emma Jeffcoat's Olympic journey how to build resilience, the importance of setting goals and how to find what you are passionate about.
Students will hear firsthand from Emma Jeffcoat about how they overcame challenges to compete in their chosen sport at the very highest level, and how some lessons they’ve learned in sport can help students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
School Student Broadband Initiative
School Student Broadband Initiative
The Australian Government is providing up to 30,000 unconnected families with school-aged children across all states and territories with a free nbn connection for 12 months. The initiative will provide fixed-line, Fixed-Wireless Plus and Sky Muster Plus services, depending on where the family lives, with large or unlimited data quotas. The SSBI is an affordability measure to narrow the digital divide and boost education opportunities for students without access to home internet.
To be eligible, a family must:have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school in 2023 and have no active NBN service. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.
It is important that consent is obtained from the family to provide their personal information to nbn, including full names, address and contact details.
If you are, or know of a family that would benefit from this initiative or if you have any questions, please let us know at school and we will make the appropriate contact to have you nominated.
Please note: It is important that consent is obtained from the family to provide their personal information to nbn, including full names, address and contact details.
K/1 have had a great start to the term and have been exploring the concept of length in Maths. They have been measuring different objects with a range of units (such as matchsticks, popsticks, blocks and dominoes) and making sure they have lined them up in a straight line with no overlapping or gaps.
On Friday, K/1 also had a fantastic rugby league session with Zac and Courtney. They played some games to practise kicking and running with the ball, and absolutely loved running into the tackle bags.
Reminder:
Please find the lunch order menu for Mondays from the Gold Rush Cafe.
In weeks 5, 8 and 10 the only items that can be ordered are Pizzas. Please note these are the only times that pizza will be available.
If your child wishes to order please place your child’s name, class, order and correct money in an envelope on Monday mornings.
