Staff have again been very busy with Professional Learning over the last two weeks with a visit from Adjunct Professor Kaye Lowe focusing on Literacy practices, St Joseph’s hosted a Literacy Day and Mrs Murray also attended a Numeracy Cluster Day in Cootamundra. Staff travelled to Albury to participate in a Sue Larkey workshop last Friday and tomorrow Miss Braun and Mrs Dean will travel to Canberra for a data analysis day.
We wish Tom and Fred all the best for competing at the Archdiocese swimming carnival in Narooma on Monday. Fred will compete in the 50m Freestyle and Tom will compete in the 50m Backstroke, 50m Breastroke and the 200m IM. We can’t wait to hear how you go!
Next week St Joseph’s will commence their Lenten activities beginning with cooking pancakes for Shrove Tuesday and celebrating Ash Wednesday mass at 10 am.
We will have our next General Community Council meeting on Wednesday 6th March commencing at 7pm – all are most welcome to attend.
Have a great week.
Kind Regards
Kirsty Beavan
Shrove Tuesday & Ash Wednesday Mass
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell”.
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. This year Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 5th February.
Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.
St Joseph’s children will cook some pancakes next Tuesday and we will be using the Green’s original pancake shaker bottles. The children will be able to choose from a variety of toppings to put on their pancakes. If you need to make alternative arrangements or if you do not wish your child to participate in this activity please let Mrs Beavan know.
Ash Wednesday Mass
One of our lovely Tumut priests will celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass with us on Wednesday 6th March at 10 am. All are most welcome to join us.
Internet User Agreements
Computer Facilities and External Network Acceptable User Agreements were sent home a couple of weeks ago. Just a reminder to sign and return as soon as possible.
Asthma Action Plans
Asthma Action plans were sent out last week to students who previously held one on file. Please complete this form as it is a requirement if your child does carry a Ventolin. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Sue Larkey "Making it Work" Workshop
Kerrie, Leanne and Jac travelled to Albury last Friday to attend the Sue Larkey ‘Making it a success’ Workshop. They learnt about different strategies, resources and behaviour support to use with all children particularly the students who are on the Autism Spectrum.
They found the workshop inspiring, entertaining and informative. They have been able to learn and collect lots of ideas that will be beneficial to use at school.
Book Covering Help!
Mrs Parker is looking for help covering some library books, please let her know if you can help. We have a big pile at the moment and it would be great to get them on the shelves as soon as possible. We can send home a small pile of books to cover with pre-cut contact. Mrs Parker will even show you the steps need to cover correctly. Thanks in advance, Cath Parker.
Today in K,1,2 the students were practising addition skills. Kindergarten worked with the new magnetic 10 frames while Year 1 and 2 drew number lines to demonstrate the ‘Jump Strategy’.
Last week our Primary class tested their creation of the First Fleet. Most of them succeeded with a floating boat. It was a fun experiment. The boats had to be 50cm or less. Students said this was a fun activity.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week Faith, Primrose, Tom and Riley at last weeks Assembly. Jack, Braxton and Ainslie received Happy Birthday wishes as well. Thank you to both classes for presenting items to share.
Last week an email was sent out to all families regarding the process to nominate for representative sports trials, carnivals and championships and information about the new CE sports website. It is often stipulated what years are eligible to apply for the trials (often Yr 5 and 6) and there is the presumption that the children applying for consideration are proficient at their sport and/or have played at a representative or high level in the sport. Winter trials of netball, soccer, hockey and rugby league are closing this week– so if your child is interested in trialling – please find the relevant information and forms on the website.
Thank you to all the families who baked for and worked on the Yavenvale Bull Sale. On the day donations totalled $783.75 and the Pearce family have also made a very generous donation of $1,000 to the Community Council. Another thank you to the families who donated their time to work on our All Together Adelong drink stall on Sunday, February 24th. We are happy to have represented our small school and to have supported a new local event. It was lovely to see our families gather and catch up on the weekend outside of our school environment.
Coming up we have a school working bee on Sunday March 24th. We hope all families can come and help with the upgrades to the watering of our outside environment. This benefits the children and keeps our school looking aesthetically tidy and welcoming. More information regarding this event to follow in the coming weeks.
We would also encourage any further helpers for Monday canteen. If you can help please contact Lauren Roche by email: sjachairperson@gmail.com
For new families if you can please send an email to sjasecretary1@gmail.com. This allows the community council to email you any important information and gives us permission to do so.
