Last week Laura, Fred, Culley, Arthur, Charlie and Ainslie participated in the Western Region Public Speaking competition. Due to restrictions the competition was held online so was very different this year. All of the children did exceptionally well to make it through to this level and should be congratulated on their wonderful speeches and the way in which they were delivered. Fred from Year 4 made it through to the Archdiocese Public speaking with his speech “The best invention” about the bugle cattle/sheep system created by Temple Grandin – congratulations Fred this is a tremendous achievement.
I have shared the following information with the Community Council earlier this week, but I just wanted to share correspondence that I had from the Year 5/6 adjudicator on the student’s speeches, who was really impressed with their content.
Your students were amazing today. They did so well.
I was really touched by the genuineness of their content. It was clear that the bushfire have impacted these students from the way it featured in their speeches. I would love to do something for the community.
I am a painter. Would you accept an artwork that could perhaps be raffled off to raise funds for the school community as part of your rebuilding Stronger Together?
Just let me know if appropriate and I will create something and send down to you.
Kindest regards
Pamela Cohen
It was so lovely to receive her email, and I have taken her up on her very generous offer. I am continually blown away by our wonderful students and their amazing resilience after what really has been a challenging two years.
I know Mrs Murray has written in the newsletter about the children receiving the first Eucharist on the weekend which was a lovely liturgy. A big thank you also to Mrs Murray for preparing the students, and to the children who were so reverent and did a wonderful job participating in the Mass.
Have a great week,
Kirsty Beavan
Principal
First Communion
Congratulations to Culley, Nic, Lochie, Laura and James who received Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of Communion, for the first time on Sunday. It was a lovely celebration with the parish and the childrens’ families. This Sunday, St James’ Church has Liturgy at 10.00am and St Mary’s Church Batlow has Mass at 8.30am (First Communion Mass).
Mission Month – ‘Socktober’
October is known as Mission Month. It is a time that we think of others less fortunate than ourselves and raise awareness of the work of Caritas.
This year Caritas is running a nationwide schools engagement program, using the game of soccer to educate and encourage support for mission projects around the world
Socktober aims to engage Catholic school students’ heads, hearts, and hands in key issues of mission and social justice through powerful metaphors found in sport, especially the world game of soccer. The program, run by Catholic Mission, will kick off nationally this week.
A Socktober Ambassador is W-League soccer star, Sarah Willacy. “The soccer elements of the Socktober program offer a lot of fun for students, but it is the tangible lessons about the importance of serving those less fortunate that will stay with them through their life,” she said.
In the Socktober program, students are encouraged to “kick goals for kids in need” through the program, which features a journey of learning and formation, packed with activities and resources, and a popular penalty shootout activity which can be held on a school’s mission day.
Mrs Dean and Years 4,5 and 6 are learning about the social justice issues associated with Mission Month and will hold a day of awareness for Socktober on Friday 29th October with crazy socks and mufti day.- Liz Murray

Recycled Materials Needed for Socktober Activities
Next Tuesday my class are going to be making sock balls for our Socktober Day on Friday 29/10. To make sock balls we need old recycled materials such as plastic bags, bread bags, old clothing and socks, styrofoam, bubble wrap, wrapping paper and string.
If you have any of these things lying around home that you no longer need, we would love to use them.
Many thanks

Do something creative
Being actively engaged in any kind of creative expression can not only be very mindful but can also be a great stress reliever. Doing something creative can be an outlet for emotional release, provide a sense of accomplishment and boost self-esteem. Doing something creative means different things to different people and creativity can take many forms.
A few ways you can Tune In to being creative include:
- Expression through art: painting, colouring, drawing, photography
- Making something for someone else: weaving, knitting, cooking, crochet
- Creating happy noise: singing, playing an instrument
- Building something: coding, Lego towers, pillow forts
This week we encourage you to do something creative with your children creativity reduces stress and helps to build connection.
