Welcome to Week 4! It was wonderful to celebrate Mother’s Day last week with a Liturgy and a cup of tea and cake. The children had also painted some wonderful portraits of their mums and there were some wonderful reflections during the liturgy of why they love their mums. A big thank you to Miss Braun for preparing the Liturgy and to our wonderful mums and special visitors who came to help us celebrate.
St Joseph’s has recently been very successful in receiving grants from various sources. KidsXpress have provided the school with countless books which are great resources for both students and parents to utilise. We await the arrival of playground resources such as a mud kitchen, cubby house and drums for the playground! KidsXpress is a Registered Children’s Mental Health Charity delivering Trauma-informed Expressive Therapy and Education Services. We are extremely grateful to KidsXpress for their very generous donations to our school.
The National Wellbeing boost that all Catholic Education schools have received will be utilised this year for activities that improve student wellbeing and engagement. Activities and excursions have been booked for St Joseph’s students in Term 3 and 4 and we are excited that K-6 students will participate in some wonderful activities that have only been made possible through the well being boost.
Ms Saunders received confirmation this week that St Josephs was successful in receiving a little under $10,000 for Snowy Hydro’s Local School STEM Fund 2024. We thank Ms Saunders for the time she put into getting the grant application together and we can’t wait for St Joseph’s Sustainable Vegetable Project to be up and running. Watch this space as we will need some help getting things in place once they arrive on school grounds!
Our Athletics carnival will be held next Friday 31st May at the Adelong Showground. It would be fabulous to have as many parent helpers as we can for time keeping.
Blessings for a super week,

Principal
Pentecost
On Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost. Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter, and marks the “birthday” of the Church. On this day, the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ disciples in the form of flames of fire, giving them the ability to speak different languages. This event is seen as the beginning of the Church, because from that day, the disciples started to spread Jesus’ message to the whole world.
Sacramental Programs
Please keep Barney, Brydee, Christopher, Eva and Reuben in your prayers as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is where children receive the bread and wine, which represent the body and blood of Jesus. It’s a way for christians to remember and connect with Jesus’ sacrifice and teachings. This sacrament is a meaningful and important part of the faith journey.
The Sacrament of First Holy Communion - Sunday 2nd June 8.30am (Adelong)
Confirmation
Please keep Billy, Henry, Primrose and Ollie in your prayers as they begin their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three sacraments of Christian initiation. Confirmation completes Baptism, by which in the laying on of hands and the anointing with Chrism Oil, we are confirmed with the fullness of the Holy Spirit.
Just a reminder, the first preparation meeting is Thursday 23rd May at 5pm in the Church at Tumut.
The Sacrament of Confirmation - Wednesday 12th June - 6pm (Tumut)

- Grounds Maintenance Roster
Families please keep an eye on the grounds and when you mow, let the school know you have mowed and the office will contact the next person on the list.
Section A | Section B |
Annetts Family | Williams Family |
Singh Family | Pearce Family |
Shiels Family | Frank Corbett Family |
We would like if families could check if some of the areas in your allocated section need whipper snipping eg; around trees, rock/rockeries etc.
Please ensure you have re-filled the fuel tanks on the mower or whipper snipper after you finish and advise the school if we require more fuel. Please also advise the school that you have mowed so we can let the next Family know that it is their turn.
Claim the date: St Joseph's Athletics Carnival will be held next Friday 31st May at the Adelong Showground.
On the day we will require quite a few parent helpers with time-keeping and field events, please let us know if you could assistance even if it is for a short time. Students will come to school as normal and then we will walk to the Showground from school. Further details will be out by the end of the week.
Rocket Math is a learning program that teaches the students addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. Year 3 students are working their way through the addition levels and Year 4 are on the multiplication level. Rocket Math is designed to improve fluency and students are motivated by seeing their own learning and success. Students have 1 minute to answer as many questions as they can. Each day they try to beat their goal and progress onto the next level.
This week in 3/4, Panav is our Rocket Champion with answering 42 multiplication questions in 60 seconds! Well done to Brydee who beat her goal in just one day!
Religion
Yesterday in Religion, students unpacked the significance of Pentecost. Students discovered the colour 'red' represents the flames of fire that appeared above the heads of the disciples when they received the Holy Spirit. So when people wear red on Pentecost (like Fr Joe on Sunday) it's a way to remember and celebrate the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. In Art, students created a mobile craft to represent the flame, dove and Holy Spirit.
Science
Last week Yr 3-4 made milk into plastic in Science. We learned about what plastic is made of and also looked at different types of plastics.
We did an experiment where we had to warm up a cup of milk and then add 3 to 4 tablespoons of white vinegar and then mould a shape and add some food colouring. We are looking forward to science this week to look at the end result.

On Tuesday 7th of May, the Year 6 students went to Tumut McAuley for a Year 6 retreat. One of the activities was a backpack with a water bottle, a first aid kit and a torch. The water bottle represented God's love and the torch represented forgiveness and the first aid kit represented survival. We thank Miss Braun for taking us, we had loads of fun.

On Tuesday 7th of May we had the Year 6 retreat at McAuley. While we were there we played a few games and we watched some plays. There was a play where one of the Year 10 leaders would act out waking up while one person watched. While this happened, three people were outside. They would then have to come back in and try and act out what the person told them had happened. It was really funny. We also went into little groups with two of the leaders and talked about different things.

On Tuesday the 7th of May, Year 6 went to a Religion Retreat Day with the other Year 6 students from St Pat’s Gundagai, St Mary’s Batlow and McAuley Tumut. With those three schools we played a couple of games and activities. We also joined into 5 small groups and talked about a backpack which had three items in it: the water bottle, a first aid kit and a torch. The water bottle was a symbol for God’s love, the first aid kit represented survival and the torch showed forgiveness even though you can feel dark sometimes you can shine your light through it. The Retreat was a really great day.
